Cape Playhouse Dennis

For generations both locals and seasonal visitors have flocked to the Cape Playhouse in Dennis.  This legendary location has been in operation for more than 70 years, a professional theatre of actors that come together on Cape Cod each summer season.

The theatre first opened its doors in the 1920s, aimed at attracting crowds from the Cape as well as nearby Boston.  As many big city theatres closed in the warmer months, the Cape Playhouse was able to attract some of the biggest stars, including Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and Gregory Peck.  In fact, Davis began as an usher at the playhouse before making her acting debut.

These days, the Cape Playhouse has the distinction of being named the Oldest Professional Summer Theatre in the entire United States.

chatham band

Each Friday night the town of Chatham gathers in one location to band together through music.  Thanks to the Chatham Band, it’s a tradition that dates back to the late 1940s.

The story of the Chatham Band actually dates back even farther, though.  The band was first organized around 1931 by a group of 12 local men.  The band members were mostly amateur musicians from Chatham and surrounding towns, and called themselves the American Legion Band.  They rehearsed at the American Legion Hall, and pooled their money to start up a music library.

A couple of years later the band then moved over the to the Red Men’s Hall, and started calling themselves the Chatham Band.  They used their talents in the dedication of area bridges and events.  When Pearl Harbor

A staple since the 1850s, the Bass River Lighthouse still stands as a welcoming beacon to Cape Cod and the surrounding area.  Originally constructed on top of a keeper’s house in 1855, Bass River Light flashed white light on a six second basis, with a 12 mile range, at the mouth of the Bass River.  This helped lead fishing boats safely through the waterways for six decades.  At this time, the Bass River played an important role for ships and schooners in Nantucket Sound.

Eventually, though, the light shut down.  It was re-activated a year later, then finally shut down in 1914 due to reduction of ship traffic because of the Cape Cod Canal.  At some point, Bass River Light also changed its name to West Dennis Light.

Most of the old-time lighthouses were
