Basking in the beauty of the Cape Cod National Seashore, tens of thousands of acres in the region sit undisturbed, offering an alluring location for visitors and locals alike.

The attraction of the Outer Cape is evident, from the miles upon miles of hiking and biking trails to the historic sites and stretches of long sandy beachfront that often draw people to the area. Much more removed than other locations on the Cape, this is the place to find inspirational unspoiled beaches. It’s also, though, a place of contrast, from more lively

With good waves for boogie boarding and for surfing, Ballston Beach presents a quiet, less crowded option for beachgoers on Cape Cod. This Truro beach also allows for some outstanding views, not just of the ocean but also of the nearby hills.

Nature isn’t just responsible for the scenery, though, it’s also gradually changing the beach itself. For years now the beach has been at the mercy of Mother Nature, with hurricane force winds just a few years ago heavily damaging the dune and flooding the nearby parking lot.

That was followed up by yet another winter storm and another overwash, creating an even wider opening in the dune. It’s a theme that’s repeated itself over and over again. That’s led area leaders and residents to question the future of the

white crest beach - wellfleet ma

A favorite spot for surfers on Cape Cod, White Crest Beach is Wellfleet could soon offer up more parking to locals and visitors. Plans call for expanding the parking lot at the beach by hundreds of spaces, but it may not be as many as previously thought.

Right now the lot has room for around 200 vehicle spaces, but future plans could make additional room for a total of 460 cars to park in the area. Originally, planners set out to make a lot for up to 600 parking spaces, but its been reported that engineers weren’t able to add that many spaces to their plan.

Some had also previously suggested making space for 1,000 vehicles, initiating concerns about how that could lead to increased traffic in the area, and mean a drain on the efforts of local police

henry beeston - outermost house - cape cod

Said to be highly influential in the formation of the Cape Cod National Seashore, author Henry Beston is most simply an Outermost legend. After spending time at college and abroad, the Quincy native returned to Cape Cod for a writing assignment, but left an even greater impact on the literary world and the Cape Cod region in the years to come.

Tasked with researching several area Coast Guard stations for a magazine, Beston eventually moved on to his next assignment: renting an Eastham cottage and drawing up plans for a tiny Coast Guard Beach home of his own. Originally designated as a private writing retreat, Beston’s tiny “Fo’castle” served as home base for an entire year.

It also served as his inspiration in coming up with the American classic “The

Hatch House Wellfleet

Seemingly blending in with their stunning, natural surroundings, a number of restored, mid-century homes provide a unique option for those visiting the National Seashore. Open to tours, the historic homes stand today as examples of important modern architectural designs once constructed along the Outer Cape.

The modern homes sprang up as artists, writers and architects flocked to the region, creatively fusing the design of the homes with the appeal of nature. Blurring the lines of outdoor and indoor living space, the homes are unique and inviting. By the time the Cape Cod National Seashore was finally designated, more than 100 such homes had been constructed within park boundaries, and those homes faced demolition.

Luckily, the Cape Cod Modern House Trust

red maple swamp trail at castle hill

It’s been off limits for several years, but a popular boardwalk of the Red Maple Swamp Trail is now open once again, and locals are beginning to take notice. The opening means visitors can now travel across the entire swamp, with a few areas still set to receive some touch-ups later this fall.

Until recently, walkers were only able to go partially into the swamp from Fort Hill Road, with barriers blocking them from crossing to Hemenway Road. Crews closed off the boardwalk because it was badly in need of repairs and had become a safety issue, with some weak posts and boards along the way.

Seashore workers handed the repairs at a substantial savings. Some estimate it could have cost $1.6 million, while local crews were able to do it for around $571,000

Already a popular beach with locals and visitors, Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is now getting high marks nationally, as well. The local beach was just named to the top ten by Stephen Leatherman, most commonly known by beach goers and vacationers as “Dr. Beach”.

Each year Dr. Beach comes up with his list of the nation’s best beaches, ranking them by dozens of different criteria. For 2017, Coast Guard Beach notably gained the number six spot, the only Cape beach to crack the top ten list, with a majority of the other beaches located in such tourist hotspots as Florida, Hawaii and California.
