Hatch House Wellfleet

Seemingly blending in with their stunning, natural surroundings, a number of restored, mid-century homes provide a unique option for those visiting the National Seashore. Open to tours, the historic homes stand today as examples of important modern architectural designs once constructed along the Outer Cape.

The modern homes sprang up as artists, writers and architects flocked to the region, creatively fusing the design of the homes with the appeal of nature. Blurring the lines of outdoor and indoor living space, the homes are unique and inviting. By the time the Cape Cod National Seashore was finally designated, more than 100 such homes had been constructed within park boundaries, and those homes faced demolition.

While Cape Cod is rich with history, one group is working to help preserve some of the Cape’s most unique, recognizable and historic architecture.  The Cape Cod Modern House Trust aims to preserve some of the modern homes still standing in the region and make them available for generations to come.

Since 2007, the preservation group has been hard at work, along with the National Park Service, helping to restore, document and stabilize some of the modernist homes found on Cape Cod.  These homes include the works of renowned architects such as Serge Chermayeff, Marcel Breuer, Olav Hammarston, Charles Zehnder, Oliver Morton and Jack Hall.  The homes all share unique design elements, blending indoor and outdoor living space, inspired by the natural beauty

While Cape Cod is well regarded for its maritime history, the area also gains acclaim for some of its Modernist homes.  The man behind much of the architecture is named Charles Zehnder and he definitely left a mark when it comes to his legacy along Cape Cod.

Zehnder is the name behind around four-dozen Modernist homes in Wellfleet and the surrounding area.  His legacy, though, began well before the first home went up.  Charles Zehnder studied architecture in college, but it was the opportunity to eat dinner with famed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright that perhaps most influenced his destiny.  Zehnder won the opportunity to connect with Wright through a design contest.
