Dennis Pond Neighborhoods
Most of the ponds in Dennis are classic kettle hole ponds, formed on the Cape as deep depressions by melting glaciers some 15,000 years ago. The freshwater ponds are largely isolated, meaning they do not drain to the sea as the saltwater ponds do. Perhaps the most storied kettle pond in Dennis is Scargo Lake -- supposedly created for an Indian princess who wanted the lake dug for fish she'd received as presents. Another myth suggests a giant dug the crater for the pond, creating the hill with dirt so local Indians wouldn't forget him. Either way, the pond is a favorite watering hole of locals with a lifeguard, restrooms and mobile snack bar in season. Scargo Lake is also stocked with trout and small mouth bass for fishing enthusiasts. Shoreline in and around Dennis ponds is moderately developed with a mix of year-round homes as well as seasonal cottages and beach houses.
