Eastham Community Summary

Eastham is rich in history –  the region was known as “Nauset” after the Nauset Indians who were the original settlers there.  First Encounter Beach commemorates the site of the first meeting between the Pilgrims and the Indians; unfortunately, the meeting did not end amicably with each group fleeing amid arrows and musket fire.  Ultimately, a small group of Pilgrims dissatisfied with the land quality in Plymouth settled Eastham in 1644, coexisting peacefully with the Indians.  Descendants of these original Pilgrims continue to live in Eastham today.

Once home to a diverse mix of industries ranging from fishing, whaling, salt works, and asparagus farming, Eastham is now renowned for the natural beauty of its beaches and conservation areas.  One-third of Eastham’s land is part of the National Seashore Park, ensuring the pristine beauty of the area remains untouched for years to come. Residents enjoy biking the Cape Cod Rail Trail as well as miles of walking trails through historic sites and panoramic views of Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.  Beaches in Eastham include two wide expanses of sand on the Atlantic Ocean.  There are also a number of small beaches on the Cape Cod Bay which are ideal for families with young children, thanks to more gentle surf and temperate waters.

Eastham is bordered by Wellfleet on the north, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Orleans on the South and Cape Cod Bay on the west.  Located approximately 39 miles east of the Sagamore Bridge, Eastham is 92 miles southeast of Boston.
