From boating and water sports, to tourist attractions and great seafood, Cape Cod has it all.  But, if you miss out on the Cape’s summer baseball league, you’re really missing out!  In fact, summer league is in full swing right now, with the opportunity to potentially see some of baseball’s future grand slam champs in action.

The Cape Cod Baseball League, also known as CCBL, is a collegiate baseball league that plays games during the summer months.  It’s also one of just ten leagues that make up the National Alliance of Summer Baseball.  While this isn’t the majors, the CCBL is the starting point for many future stars.  The 2014 MLB season, alone, included 265 former CCBL players.

If you want to head out to a game, the Cape Cod League’s regular season goes from the middle of June through the middle of August.  The West and East Division Champs are decided in the playoffs, with the winning teams going on to the championship game.  West Division teams include the Bourne Braves, Falmouth Commodores, Wareham Gatemen, Cotuit Kettleers and Wareham Gatemen.  The East Division includes the Chatham Anglers, Orleans Firebirds, Brewster Whitecaps, Harwich Mariners and Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

Not only is the summer league a great attraction for a few hours of fun, but the league has also been showcased on the big screen.  The 2001 film, Summer Catch, used the Cape Cod League as a setting.  In addition, the novel, Slider, is also based on the league, as are a number of other books and a documentary from 2003 titled, Touching the Game.

One of the great things about attending a game is that the fun comes at family-friendly prices.  The league doesn’t sell any tickets.  Instead, some teams ask for donations when you enter the gate, while others sometimes “pass the hat” for donations during games.  If you want to attend the All-Star game near the end of July, though, tickets are only $5 each.  In addition, if you have younger kids, you may also want to check out the league’s Youth Baseball Clinics.  These clinics run for about six weeks during the summer months.

Not only can you catch a game or clinic during the summer months, but also visitors and locals, alike, have the opportunity to visit the CCBL Hall of Fame in Hyannis.  You’ll find the “Dugout” on the bottom floor of the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum.
