Long Pond: Cape Cod’s Largest Pond

If you’re searching for a truly unique destination, consider taking a trip out to Long Pond.  Known as Cape Cod’s largest pond, Long Pond is located on the border of Brewster and Harwich and stretches more than 700 acres.  This freshwater kettle pond offers crystal clear water and a sandy bottom.  The deepest part of Long Pond is 66 feet, with an average water depth of around 23 feet.

Swimming is extremely popular in the area, with a lifeguard stationed at Long Pond between around July 4 to Labor Day, every day of the week during the morning and afternoon hours.  If you’re looking instead for some outdoor recreation that takes in some of the scenery, there is the Long Pond Circular Bicycle Route.  The route stretches about 13 miles, starting on Cape Cod Rail Trail and ending on Deer Park Road before finishing in the parking lot.

As for fishing, Long Pond offers a great choice for those hoping to snag small mouth bass.  Most of the fish come in the range of three to five pounds.  Keep in mind, though, because of all the swimmers and boaters in the summer months it is sometimes difficult to fish.  The springtime is really the best option for fishermen.  You’ll also find both white and yellow perch.  If you do plan to fish, though, make sure you have a fishing license before you head out.

With approximately six-and-a-half miles of shoreline, many Brewster and Harwich residents have chosen to make Long Pond their home.  You’ll find both homes and seasonal cottages in the area, along with beaches.  You’ll also find three boat ramps to Long Pond.  One of them is in Brewster, and the other two are in Harwich.

To find Long Pond, head to the Brewster/Harwich border, where you find the pond just to the north of Route 6.  Take exit 10 off Route 6, and then head north on Route 124.  Parking at Long Pond in the summer months requires a town beach sticker.   Once you get to Long Pond, though, you’ll be glad you did.  The chance to visit, or potentially live near this fantastic freshwater pond in beautiful Cape Cod provides a host of recreational opportunities.
