sesuit harbor cafe - east dennis ma

Popular for its bay beaches, its deep-sea fishing and its quaint location, historic East Dennis is filled with generations of charm. Steep in history, it’s not hard to take a step back in time when visiting or laying down roots in the region.

As one of the five villages of Dennis, East Dennis is known for its historic homes and businesses. Generations ago, the old Shiverick’s Shipyard sat in East Dennis. A plaque now marks the spot, plus another plaque indications the location of the very first salt works business in the area.

The landmark Evangelical Free Church still stands on Center Street, as do a number of historic old homes. In fact, many locals in East Dennis can trace their families on the Cape back for generations.

wrinkle point - west dennis ma

With enticing views of the Bass River and Nantucket Sound, the West Dennis community of Wrinkle Point still remains a delightful location, years after its humble beginnings. The quirky name is said to originate from the “wrinkles”, or rather winkles that were once so plentiful that locals cooked up and dined on the tiny, edible snails right from the shore.

Now decades later, the private community is home to a clubhouse overlooking the river, a swimming pool and two private beaches. You’ll also find a marina with the benefit of direct boating access to Nantucket Sound.

Some homes in the community even have their own private boat docks right on the Bass River. In addition, you’ll also find some small boats for community members to use.

dennis port beach - dennis ma

From the beach to the theatre, local shops to outdoor recreation, you’ll find it all in and around Dennis Port. The tiny village on Nantucket Sound is a prime spot for tourists, but just as prized by those with roots in the area.

Route 28 is said to heavily influence some of those tourists, as a number of new shops have popped up along the roadway in recent years. That economic development could soon get another boost, thanks to a major road project.

Federal and state transportation money is funding a new multi-phase highway upgrade, running all the way through Dennis. Planned additions include wide new bike lanes and sidewalks running alongside both sides of the road. In addition, crews will be revamping pedestrian safety and bringing the sidewalks

maritime landing - dennis ma

Dennis Village could be in line for a new development of more than two-dozen homes. Plans for the proposed Maritime Landing development call for 28 new residences to go in just off Route 6A. Some of the residences would be duplexes while others would be stand-alone residences.

The nearly six-acre property sits on the south side of the roadway, behind some commercial properties. The site also sits conveniently within a short walk of village center.

Surrounding a large green space, it’s said that the homes will all feature two- to three-bedrooms, with around 1,400 to 1,800 square feet of living space. The homes would also include either side or front porches, a back patio, a full basement and a garage.

There have been some concerns raised by nearby

cape cod offroading

If you crave the adventure of off-roading on Cape Cod, you’ll find two options in Dennis. Both Crowes Pasture Beach and Chapin Memorial Beach allow for off-road, four-wheel drive vehicles, as long as you have a permit.

Chapin Beach provides a quiet location with miles upon miles of sandy beachfront. Along with its off-roading trails the location is also known for its shallow tidal pools.

Meanwhile, the other location is the remote Crowes Pasture Beach. One of the Cape’s most secluded spots for swimming, the beach is known for its smooth sand and natural beauty. While you can currently drive right out on the sand at Crowe’s Pasture, the site is also a great place to jump on one of the trails and walking paths that weave throughout the conservation area.

crowes pasture - dennis ma

One of the last remaining exposed tidal flats in Massachusetts will stay open to off-roaders, at least for now. Selectmen in Dennis recently voted to withdraw the town’s application to update its beach management plan for Crowes Pasture Beach.

That’s significant because the off-road beach faced the possibility of being closed off to all off-road vehicles. While that’s been allowed at Crowes Pasture for decades, some suggest state regulators began calling the practice into question only after the town took action, proposing to make an update to its long-standing management plan.

Citing concerns over things like pollution and erosion, state regulators proposed banning all recreational vehicles from driving out on the Crowes Pasture

cape cod rail trail

The popular Cape Cod Rail Trail is expanding, with the addition of new bridges linking Dennis to Yarmouth. Recently local leaders helped officially open one new trail extension in Dennis, the Cape Cod Rail Trail Bridge going over Route 134. It also gave officials the chance to celebrate new state funding that will help construct trails in dozens of towns.

The Route 134 bridge helps extend the rail trail by nearly another four-miles, the second such bridge to go in as part of the trail extension. Last fall another bridge went in over Station Avenue. The cost of the two totaled more than $7 million.

Yet another bridge, the George Allaire Bridge over the Bass River is set to open soon too, with many area cycling groups cheering the latest accomplishments.
