henry beeston - outermost house - cape cod

Said to be highly influential in the formation of the Cape Cod National Seashore, author Henry Beston is most simply an Outermost legend. After spending time at college and abroad, the Quincy native returned to Cape Cod for a writing assignment, but left an even greater impact on the literary world and the Cape Cod region in the years to come.

Tasked with researching several area Coast Guard stations for a magazine, Beston eventually moved on to his next assignment: renting an Eastham cottage and drawing up plans for a tiny Coast Guard Beach home of his own. Originally designated as a private writing retreat, Beston’s tiny “Fo’castle” served as home base for an entire year.

It also served as his inspiration in coming up with the American classic “The

cape cod bay target ship

It’s not always visible today, but the Cape Cod Bay Target Ship is somewhat of a unique addition to the waters off Eastham. Officially known as the SS James Longstreet, the ship sits several miles off the coast, in the same spot its sat for well more than a half-century.

Named after a Confederate general, the ship is more commonly called the Target Ship by locals. It gets its nickname, unsurprisingly, from the role it played for the military for decades.

Originally built in the 1940s for carrying cargo, the World War II vessel was soon severely damaged in a storm. With the only other solution of turning the entire ship into scrap, the US Navy soon began using it in a new role as target practice.

That’s a role it held through the early 1970s, often

red maple swamp trail at castle hill

It’s been off limits for several years, but a popular boardwalk of the Red Maple Swamp Trail is now open once again, and locals are beginning to take notice. The opening means visitors can now travel across the entire swamp, with a few areas still set to receive some touch-ups later this fall.

Until recently, walkers were only able to go partially into the swamp from Fort Hill Road, with barriers blocking them from crossing to Hemenway Road. Crews closed off the boardwalk because it was badly in need of repairs and had become a safety issue, with some weak posts and boards along the way.

Seashore workers handed the repairs at a substantial savings. Some estimate it could have cost $1.6 million, while local crews were able to do it for around $571,000

eastham target shipIt never actually served in battle off Cape Cod, yet Eastham’s famed “target ship” is about to get a long-overdue honor for the role it played in military history. The board of selectmen in Eastham recently voted to commemorate the SS Longstreet with a memorial plaque at First Encounter Beach. It’s hoped the plaque will be finished in time for a dedication in February, marking the ship’s 75th year.

Countless dummy bombs and missiles hit the SS Longstreet during a more than quarter century span from the mid 1940s to early 1970s, yet the ship never fired back while stationed off Cape Cod. That’s because the Longstreet wasn’t actually at battle, but rather used as target practice by those at Otis Air Force Base.

Named after Confederate General James
